With computers and TV replacing sports and outdoor exercise, and fast food replacing nutritional, well-balanced meals, we are becoming a society of unhealthy, couch potatoes. More and more people – young and old—are becoming overweight, putting themselves at risk for high blood pressure, heart diseases, diabetes and more. One in three or 58 million American adults aged 20 through 74 are overweight.

Here are some diseases that can occur in overweight people.

  1. Obesity can escort to sudden death from heart disease. This is because of putting extra stress on the heart to do the job efficiently.
  2. Another obesity fact is diabetes. Obese people are twice as likely to generate type 2 diabetes as those who are not overweight.
  3. Obesity increases the chances of osteoarthritis. This is because the excess body weight puts more pressure on the joint cartilage.
  4. Sleep apnea is a condition where a person stops breathing for short periods of time while they are sleeping as a result of the presence of excess body fat on the neck or chest.
