Diet Pills – The birth of an industry
The early years of Diet Pills raised a lot of eyebrows as they were seen as a marketing gimmick out to exploit the psychology of obese people. But, just like any early invention Diet pills failed to meet the expectations of the common man. This was understandable because of the lack of clinical studies and the absence of advanced clinical instruments and techniques. But, then the Pharmaceutical industries knew that Diet pill industry was a potential gold mine and they latched on to it.
According to urban legend, there were “diet pills” in the late 19th century and early 20th century that claimed to contain tapeworms or tapeworm eggs. The advertisements of these organic ‘diet pills were also worth noticing – ‘Friends for a fair form & ‘ Easy to swallow.” There are even reassuring phrases in this ad that note that sanitized tapeworms are “guaranteed harmless” and have “no ill effects.”
